Given the mild winter, this year we are expected to see a high numbers of ticks.

Avoidance Tips:

Cover exposed areas when outdoors. Wear high socks, long sleeved shirts when possible.

Bathe or shower nightly and perform tick checks at the end of each day

It can take up to 48-72 hours for a tick to transmit Lyme, so prompt removal can help avoid the transmission of Lyme Disease.

Insect Repellent

Should contain 10-30% DEET

Apply freely to clothing and hats but sparingly to exposed skin

Avoid combination products of sunscreen and insect repellent together.

Tick Removal:

Grasp tick as close to the skin as possible with a tweezers.

Slowly pull the tick away from the skin

Call us if any piece remains in the skin

Clean the area with alcohol or antibacterial soap

Do not bring the tick into the office

If you live in an area with a lot of ticks, you might consider purchasing an easy tick removal spoon called “Ticked Off.” It is very easy and effective. http://www.tickedoff.com/

Please call us if any rash, fevers, or joint and body pain develop 3-30 days after a bite.

For more information visit http://www.cdc.gov/Lyme

Spring has arrived early here in Massachusetts. If you suffer from Spring Allergies, start your medications early and stay on top of those allergy symptoms. Purchase your medications now before stores run low on supplies.

If your child has asthma, he/she may need to begin their inhaled corticosteroids such as Flovent; check your asthma action plan.

Antihistamines and Allergy medications are all now available Over the Counter.

Tips to minimize allergy symptoms:

Pollen counts are at their highest between 5am-10am. If possible avoid outdoor activities during these peak times.

Keep windows in the bedrooms closed in order to reduce the pollen in the room.

Shower every night before bedtime to remove any pollen that is on the hair and body.

Change clothes after coming inside from playing outdoors.

Wear a hat that can easily be removed after coming indoors.

Each Fall we offer flu inoculations clinics at our office for our patients without the need for an appointment. The cost of the inoculation is often covered by your insurance or offered free, depending on the delivery method. Flu inoculations are offered by injection or by a nasal mist. There are restrictions on which patients can receive which type and we will discuss that with you at the clinic. Please note that if your child is allergic to eggs, you must speak with a nurse before receiving the flu vaccine. Otherwise, all children age 6 months or older can receive the flu vaccine.

There are currently no additional clinics scheduled. Please contact us for an appointment if you would like to receive a flu inoculation.
